Michael Kiwanuka, We were evergreen, Nick Mulvey @ The Hope.

This was a nice surprise. I had a text from my mate last week asking if i wanted to go and see Michael Kiwanuka. D.E.F.O! was my response.
See, you take your eye off the ball for a moment and you risk missing what promises to be one of the gigs of the year.
I haven't been keeping up with what's on for a few weeks and if i'd have missed this . . . . well, i would have missed this. Tickets have gone.
Thanks Ollie and your hawkeye!
I first heard of Michael Kiwanuka back in the spring, when his sublime debut track 'tell me a tale' first broke. It sounded like an old track, booming soulful vocal, jazz style drum shuffles and afro horn stabs.
I was really pleased to find that he is a talent at a tender age of just 23. He has already been drawing comparisons with the likes Van Morrison and Bill Withers. High praise indeed and just. His first 2 releases have come via Communion records on ltd edition 10" vinyl. Tell me a tale is fetching a tidy £70 on Discogs.

There is stellar support from We were evergreen  - who i have to confess to having never heard of - and the excellent Nick Mulvey from the Portico Quartet.
Gonna be a real good , feel good winter warmer!

New Julio Bashmore - Well wishers

Lovely new tune from the man like Julio Bashmore.

It's been a big year for this talented young producer.
I have at least 2 of his tracks in my top 50 of 2011.

I think this will lift the roof off many a club night. Big!!

Kinshasa One Two - The worldwide sound of DRC!

The Drc (Democratic republic of Congo) project is an Oxfam initiative spearheaded by former Blur frontman Damon Albarn, which saw a troupe of UK based musicians travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo to record an album with local musicians.
Damon is a partner in the Honest Jon's record label and is no stranger to the sounds of World music. Having been involved in numerous projects; none more so than the excellent 'Honest Jon's chop up' which i was lucky to see recently.
He was joined on the voyage to Central Africa by a varied cast of musicians including XL record label boss Richard Russell, Actress, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Marc Antoine, Alwest, Remi Kabaka, Rodaidh McDonald and Kwes.
The album, entitled Kinshasa One Two, was recorded in Kinshasa over a five day period in July this year and will see release via UK label Warp

All of the proceeds from the album go to Oxfam's work in the DRC, worthwhile indeed
I have just bagged a heavyweight vinyl package, which comes with an automatic download of the album.Whatever your flavour, check this album out and support by buying one of the formats.

Flaoting points on point.

For me, having listened to all 5 promo tracks on Floating points new Shadows EP, on Eglo records, i am of the opinion that this uber talented producer is one of our finest Electronic music pioneers.

I have been following him since his first releases back in 2009 and i think that his music has developed a mature sound of someone well beyond his 25 years.
From the outset, he has released lush atmospheric deep house music and over the last 3 years or so his sound has become instantly recognisable.

Check out this new EP, scheduled for release on the 21st Nov.

Zed Bias - Music deep inside

Dave Jones aka Zed Bias/Maddslinky is possibly one of the hardest working men in elctronic music today.
Dave made his name in the UK garage scene and is possibly best known for his track 'Neighbourhood', which bothered the UK charts in Summer 2000. He has admitted that following that success, he turned away from the more main stream sound in search of more underground pastures. A place he feels much more comfortable.
This year has seen the release of his album 'Biosonic hotsauce' under his Zed Bias alias. This has been closely followed by another album 'Make a change' released as his other alias, Maddslinky. Both are laden with ear rattling basslines and the usual dubbed out house sounds that you would associate with either
pseudonym. For me though, one of the tracks of the year is the wonderful 'Music deep inside', forthcoming on Swamp 81.  On neither of the albums, it is a stand alone release and still with no official release date. Stop teasing us people, let it go!

Hypnotic brass ensemble double header!

I have seen the Hypnotic brass ensemble close up at a cracking gig in Brighton a year or so ago.
Electric is the word i can find to best describe their set. For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure yet, i seriously recommend doing what you can to purchase a ticket.
Consisting of 8 brothers, all fathered by one Philip Cohran, jazz musician and trumpeter for Sun Ra Arkestra.
All brothers were tutored in the musical arts whilst growing up, and have come together to form one of the heaviest sounding brass bands you are likely to hear.
They perform at two events in London in Nov;

1/ This is just a monster line up. Billed as 'Another Honest Jon's chop up' (chop up being the African slang for festival). The line up includes Damon Albarn, Flea, Tony Allen, Phil Cohran & Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Shangaan Electro, Theo Parrish
Fatoumata Diawara, M.anifest and Cheick Tidiane Seck. Unmissable!

2/ Hypnotic brass ensemble play the world famous Jazz Cafe in Camden. Supported by the amazing Hackney Colliery band and Mr Wah Wah himself, Dom Servini.

It looks like the Barbican gig may have sold out already, so dig hard. You will find.

Two biggies!

1/ On Friday we have the pleasure of hosting Mr Simon Lee from
Faze Action. Having seen Mr Lee play a number of times i can honestly say that it is a show i'm very much looking forward to.
In keeping with the Mile wide smile club ethic, Simon plays music from across the board and aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

If any of you beautiful people would like to come and join us for a good old fashioned stomp, follow the link below for more info;
Simon Lee / Mickey Duke / Chri5tian - Riki-Tik stomp!

2/ I have the pleasure of playing at the might Wah Wah 45 label night.
Quite simply entitled 'Wah Wah Live' this night is going to be a guaranteed smash!
An unbelievable line up that goes a little like this;
DJ'S; Greg Wilson, Gilles Peterson and MC Earl Zinger, Jazzman Gerald, Dom Servini, Scrimshire, Sampsa Vilhunen, Mickey Duke and DJ Konvex.
Live; Colman Brothers, Stac and Blue Daisy, The Boxettes, Scrimshire and Gideon Conn
On top of that there is the famous musical bingo, which is a must if you haven't played before.
I will be supporting Jazzman Gerald and Co, playing 'Tittyshakers', 'Surf rock' and '50's / 60's R&B'.
There won't be a better night out this year! Nuff said.

Mosaic meltdown; Omar, Don Letts, Miles Cleret.

So, Oct is on us and the last remnants of the Summer have been rinsed. Quite a remarkable couple weeks of weather have left me confused as to which season i'm living in.
However, two things are certain in Oct; 1/ The weather is certain to take a change for the worse, leaving me in no doubt of which season i'm living in. 2/ Brighton is bustling and the club night calender is bursting at the seams.
Just take a look along the right hand side of this blog and you will see what i mean, the list of quality nights out is a long one.

For this week, along with SBTRKT on Wed, this is the stand out night for Mile wide smile club;

Mile wide smile club - Radio podcast No:1

Well , finally! I've been promising a radio podcast for quite sometime and here it is.
Planning it was an effort, seems so easy on paper. Biggest thing for me to overcome was actually listening to myself. Is that really what i sound like?! Blimey, you poor folk!
Anyway, i did it and although i'm not convinced by the sound of my own voice, there is a 3hr 20 minute show with some cracking tunes accompanied by some dulcit West Midland waffle.
I'm hoping to do a monthly show and see where it leads. I've already talked to someone about doing a proper radio show in Brighton. Aaah! I dunno, it's all new to me. Ultimately it's been fun doing it, so fingers crossed, once i overcome the dislike of my accent and get used to talking crap i may really enjoy it.
Good, bad or indifferent, it would be nice to get some feedback, so do drop me a comment on here, or
Facebook - mile wide smile club. Email - milewidesmileclub@yahoo.co.uk.

Radiohead - King of the limbs remixes

So, have you bought or at least heard Radiohead's 'King of limbs'?
Already one of my albums of the year. The download version came first, followed a few weeks later by the vinyl. Then a limited edition newspaper wrapped 10" vinyl. Jeeez! Music junkie i am, succomb i did and ended up with all formats - kind of hoping that the limited edition copy will pay me back some day.
So, now we have the King of limbs remixes.  Maybe this is in place of the mystery King of limbs 2 project, which seems like it never was.
To be honest, i'm happy to shell out again. The first 12" features 'Little by little' remixed by Caribou and my album fave, 'Lotus flower', remixed by Jaques Greene. I'm a fan of both artists and look forward to hearing these. More remixes are planned at different intervals throughout the summer, with Flying lotus worded to be part of the remix crew. They promise a great deal, let's hope they live up to the hype.

There seems to be no clips of the forthcoming remixes, so we will have to do with the album sampler.
Enjoy if you havn't heard it already.

WAH WAH 45's LIVE in Brighton.

Big new night for Brighton's descerning clubbers!
The excellent WAH WAH 45 record label are bringing their heavy dancefloor sound to the seaside.

A few words from label head Dom Servini; Wah Wah 45s are one of London’s leading independent record labels, who not only specialize in bass heavy soul, dub reggae and big band funk, but also know how to put on a top notch event. As well as their regular London monthlies at venues such as Favela Chic and The Vibe Bar, the last couple of years have seen the label host two massive events at London’s famous Scala. Both nights saw over 1000 people attend and lose their minds to acts such as Quantic, Hackney Colliery Band, DJ Format, The Apples, Bonobo, Stac and many more.

Saturday June 11th sees the Wah Wah 45s crew take the Wah Wah Live show on the road. First stop for this year is Brighton, a city close to the label’s heart. The line up is a who’s who of the great and good of the left-of-centre music scene in the city. Whether it’s the uplifting dub reggae of the Resonators, the skanking soul of Tin Roots, the wobbly bass music of Tru Thoughts producer Hint, or exciting new beat maker Ambassadeurs, we’ve got it all under one roof. And with Wah Wah head honchos Dom Servini & Scrimshire taking up the rear, plus local boys done good, Pause and Mickey Duke, running things in the bar, we’ve got all corners covered.

Add to that the added bonus of bespoke optical delights, and the Wah Wah Shop for all of your limited edition tees, bags for life, stickers, vinyl and CDs and you know we really, really are spoiling you.

Spoiled indeed! If you havn't checked the WAH WAH sound, it's about time you got on board.

Mile wide smile club May 2011 charts

Howdy smilers ; )

The months go marching on at a pace i can barely keep up with. More big tunes, another big chart.
One of the tracks of the year for me so far and at No 1 in my chart this month, Tom Noble's remix of Charlie Clemons. These tracks were produced back in 1980 by Charlie and his buddies just before the collapse of the Disco scene. Following that the project was shelved but luckily Charlie kept the original tapes.Tom Noble has got hold of them and took them to Philly for remixing. The result is two killer deep Disco jams. Hurry up though, they are in seriously short supply!

Tribute - Gil Scott Heron

We have lost yet another great from the black music world. Gil Scott Heron died aged 62 on May 27th of an illness he picked up whilst travelling aroung Europe.
Like many of my era who attended Blues, Soul and Jazz Funk parties back in the mid - late 80's, i was introduced to Gil's work after dropping foot and sweating profusely to 'The Bottle'. The rhythmic kick of the bass drum and snare, the repetetive keys riff and the free flying, dancing sounds of flautist and long time collaborator Brian Jackson, all topped by Gil's flowing, emotive vocals. First time i heard it, i went nuts, we all went nuts and people still go nuts when they hear it today. That was just the beginning of my journey up this musical mountain. There are too many great songs from his catalogue for me to pick a favourite. 'We almost lost Detroit', 'It's your world', 'New York is killing me' and 'The Revolution will not be televised' are just a few of many that have made an impression on me. You only have to look through the untold scrolls of tributes from the general public, to artists, politicians, musicians etc etc, the love and appreciation goes on and on; watch out for television and radio tributes aplenty.
Gil Scott Heron was widely regarded within the Hip-Hop/Rap world as the 'Godfather of Rap', a moniker he apparently hated. There are tributes from the likes of Chuck D, Mos Def, Eminem, Talib Kweli and Snoop Dogg who all cite him as a major influence. He certainly laid down the template for such artists.
Poet, novelist, singer, songwriter, musician, political agitator, inventor of rap music, maybe? His own worst enemy in latter years, definately. He released the major body of his work between 1970 and the early 80's, picking up his recording career again in 1990 and onwards, culminating in the release of 'I'm new here' in 2010 and the follow up remix album by Jamie XX, 'We're new here'.
As with many in life, Gil Scott Heron has lived his fair share of trauma. Coming from a broken home as a child, he seemed to break free of the ghetto and made a living preaching through his music to Americas black communities, to take control, be proud and break the cycle. Unfortunately, he fell into the same trap he warned against just halfway through his career. Crippled by artistic impotence, he spiralled into a life of drug addiction. Arrests and jail time followed for drug possession. At the time of his death, Gil was also HIV positive.
Of all the tributes i have read over the last few days, i liked these words from Richard Russell, founder of XL records. As well as releasing both albums, he helped produce 'I'm new here' and conceived the idea for the remix album 'We're new here'.
"Gil was not perfect in his own life. But neither is anyone else. And he judged no one. He had a fierce intelligence, and a way with words which was untouchable; an incredible sense of humour and a gentleness and humanity that was unique to him." On the trappings of fame, Richard says; "He could have had all those things. But he was greater than that. He seemed wholly uninterested in money. His talent was immense. He was a master lyricist, singer, orator and keyboard player. His spirit was immense. He channelled something that people derived huge benefit from."

As sombre as i feel at the passing of this bonafide legend, i will take the music and the memories and keep playing them over and over and over . . . . . .
